Motorcycle accidents in Morocco

Marruecos en moto

In recent years, alongside the growing popularity of trail riding, Morocco has experienced a significant increase in motorcycle tourism. As a result, there has been a rise in traffic accidents involving motorcyclists, especially among foreign tourists traveling across the country on two wheels. This phenomenon has raised concern among both local authorities and the traveling community.

A Concerning Trend: Rising Motorcycle Accidents

Although Morocco has managed to reduce overall traffic accident fatalities, motorcyclists remain a vulnerable group. Between 2015 and 2022, deaths among two-wheel vehicle users increased by 31.1%, according to data from the Ministry of Transport and Logistics.

The number of fatalities on Moroccan roads has been rising each year, and according to official data, 40% of the victims are motorcyclists.

Factors Contributing to the Risk

Several factors help explain this increase in motorcycle accidents among tourists:

  • Poor road conditions: The most popular routes cross arid, mountainous, and poorly signposted areas, which increases the risk of accidents.
  • Extreme weather conditions: Torrential rains can cause flash floods. In September 2024, a Spanish tourist died when her vehicle was swept away by a sudden current in the Tata region.
  • Lack of familiarity with the environment: Many tourists are not accustomed to local traffic regulations or the conditions of Moroccan roads.

Measures Underway

The Moroccan authorities have introduced strategies to improve road safety, such as the creation of the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) and the “Safe Moto” plan, which promotes helmet use —still not widely adopted— and respect for the traffic code.

However, 2023 data shows a 9.5% increase in road traffic fatalities compared to the previous year, suggesting that much remains to be done.
In 2024, accidents in Morocco rose by more than 5% compared to the year before, and the first quarter of 2025 has been far from encouraging.

Recommendations for Motorcycle Travelers

To reduce risks, it is advisable to:

  • Maintain a solid riding skill level: Traveling outside one’s usual environment often highlights weaknesses in riding technique. Having a strong foundation and riding regularly reduces the risk of accidents. Mountain road and off-road riding courses are highly recommended.
  • Stay in good physical condition: Exploring the unknown involves facing new challenges. Climate, terrain, food, and culture all create stress that increases energy expenditure. The more fatigue, the less concentration — and the higher the risk. Good physical fitness helps maintain focus at all times, even under adverse conditions.
  • Check the motorcycle’s condition: Make sure your bike is in optimal shape before starting your trip.
  • Use protective gear: A helmet, boots, light-colored clothing with reflective elements, and other safety equipment are essential.
  • Check the weather forecast: Avoid traveling during heavy rains or storms.
  • Learn local traffic rules: Familiarize yourself with Moroccan traffic laws and road signs.
  • Medical insurance with repatriation: Healthcare services in Morocco are not the same as what you may be used to when traveling closer to home. It is worth having medical insurance that covers any health emergency and, in serious cases, handles and covers your repatriation.
  • Motorcycle insurance with repatriation: Make sure your motorcycle insurance policy includes repatriation of the bike in case of breakdown or accident.

Morocco offers spectacular landscapes for motorcycle enthusiasts, but prioritizing safety is essential to fully enjoy the experience without setbacks.
